Description

Detect the production of CAMP factor by Group B streptococci with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Beta Lysin Disk

Christie, Atkins and Munch-Peterson1 observed a lytic phenomenon when hemolytic and non-hemolytic Group B streptococci are grown in a zone of staphylococcal beta lysin activity. This phenomenon was used to develop a test that presumptively identified Group B streptococci. This test was known as CAMP test2. A filter paper disk impregnated with beta lysin is used as a substitute for Staphylococcus aureus culture.

Group B streptococci produce a protein-like compound, CAMP factor, which together with beta lysin produces potent hemolysis in sheep blood agar.

  • Easy to interpret:
    • Positive test- crescent-shaped zone of hemolysis.
    • Negetive test- no hemolytic zone or small helmet-shaped hemolytic zone.
  • Ready to use: Reagent-impregnated disk.

Beta Lysin Disk supplies beta lysin obtained from Staphylococcus aureus that acts synergistically with CAMP factor to produce a crescent-shaped zone of complete hemolysis on the sheep blood agar. Beta lysin reacts with sphingomyelin in the sheep erythrocyte membrane to produce ceramide. CAMP factor reacts with ceramide to disorganize the erythrocyte lipid bilayer causing an arrowhead or crescent shaped area of complete hemolysis.
