Description

Description

Bilirubin is widely utilized to monitor the liver function and their disease, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis; or the effects of medicines which are damage the liver. It acts as a pigment in certain algae to capture light energy. Its double bonds are isomerizes in the presence of light, which is employed in phototherapy of jaundiced newborns babies. It is used to detect the blocking in bile ducts.

This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Alfa Aesar product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.

General Description

  • Bilirubin is a degradation product of heme following the activity of heme oxidase. Bilirubin is produced in the reticuloendothelial system and conjugated in the liver. It appears as an orange-yellow pigment that is secreted in the bile
  • High levels of unconjugated bilirubin can result in jaundice, a condition of the yellowing of skin and eyes. This can be toxic and may be a sign of severe liver disease
  • Bilirubin has been seen to have functions including cell signaling, metabolism modulation, and immune regulation
  • It has protective antioxidant activity at moderate levels

Application

  • Bilirubin is widely used in studies of liver function and disease, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis
  • As an antioxidant, bilirubin has been studied in protection against H2O2-mediated cell death
  • It can be used as a scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or as an inhibitor of NADPH oxidase
